IN THE MIX
STAFF WRITER December 30, 2003
Turn on the TV. Visit the Internet. Leaf through a book. Read an article. Health news is all around us. Following is a weekly compendium of news and views in the media mix.
Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld's column appears weekly in Parade magazine, and he appears every weekend in the television series "Sunday Housecall" on Fox News Channel. Now, he has written "Breakthrough Health" (Rodale, $14.95), in which he offers 167 medical discoveries, treatments and cures. *** Claudia Strauss provides caretaking skills for friends and family of people with depression. "Talking to Depression: Simple Ways to Connect When Someone in Your Life Is Depressed" is published by NAL, a division of Penguin ($13). *** Long Island eye surgeon Dr. Kenneth Rosenthal is conducting the first Food and Drug Administration-approved trial on iris implants. Each year, one in 50,000 people is born with a missing or defective iris, the colored part of the eye surrounding the pupil. It can cause poor vision and sensitivity to light. Rosenthal was the first surgeon in the world to implant an artificial iris that he co-invented, called the Rash-Rosenthal Iris Diaphragm Ring, in 1996. For more technical information on the device: www.oph tec.com. *** The National Alliance for Autism Research and the National Institutes of Health have joined forces to study the genetics of autism. For more information: www.naar.org. *** The American Dietetic Association's recent study on the benefits of frequent cereal consumption in children can be found at www.eatright.org.
